Cā;
1. We are not asking ARPA to buy the CSD (Computer Science Dept.)
display system - only the IMP if the remote connection is to be
done that way.
2. I have wanted to upgrade our present display system to the
standard of the Yale system. It would cost about $75K for IC
memory and say $25K more for a minicomputer and connections.
However, since the Datadisc system works even though it is not
as flexible, I decided to wait until the cost comes down by
a factor of two. Of course, it might be reasonable to do it as
part of a project involving connecting displays through the
Net.
3. As to time-sharing systems, we still intend to go to TENEX.
The important question which may not be determined till we
try it, is whether when we add our real time features to TENEX,
we will still have a system that can absorb the future improvements
to standard TENEX or whether we will have to maintain the
system ourselves from that time on.
4. There still needs to be time-sharing research, but I have
no concrete proposal at present.
5. As to LISP, when we go to TENEX, we can consider switching to
BBN LISP. At present, no ARPA money is being spent on LISP-70.
This has been 2/3 a Colby NIMH project until recently when our
guy went to Xerox which is supporting his continued work. Actually,
however, there has been a misunderstanding between me and Colby
about LISP-70. I have not influenced it much, and I supposed
Colby was supporting it entirely for his own reasons. However,
it now turns out that Colby thought he was supporting it as a
contribution to the general welfare of the Lab, a confusion
which the people working on LISP-70 did nothing to dispell. I
think it is almost done now, however.
6. I am agreeable to participating in both the LISP and the time-sharing
committee efforts.
7. The Foonly production documentation is still promised for the
beginning of April and my cut off date is still the beginning of May.
Information International is interested in financing the production
of two of them if they can have one. I have postponed any serious
discussion of this until the production documentation is complete.
The idea may have fatal flaws, and I have not yet made sure that
there is a meeting of minds.
8. I doubt your contention that chaos cannot occur with committee
size = 1.
9. Some of the ideas in our proposal to NSF for home terminal research
may interest you. We are sending a copy for your information.
